Poklong Anading utilizes dust—the unseen stuff of the universe—as both image and object in Blind Spot, his latest solo show at Mag:net Gallery Paseo this month. By doing so, Anading engages in a somewhat cyclical and conceptual process of reflexivity: collecting a by-product of previous artistic works and fluidly transmuting them into new forms. In Blind Spot, Anading exhibits a series of oil-on-canvas paintings which source their imagery from patterns created by magnified dust particles. Anading collects dust particles from his discarded canvases, them to a microscope’s glass slide, and utilizes a light projector to project images and patterns created by these accumulations. Anading then traces and paints over the images projected onto the canvas. Anading includes in Blind Spot his Dust Folio series, a virtual portfolio or collection of particles which have accumulated over a year of stay in his studio using clear book fillers. Each of the clear book fillers were left hanging solely on the walls of his studio to collect dust particles and to the modest evidence that have settled onto the wall were photographed – marking all such traces as events. Anading also presents an installation piece consisting of an exhaust fan wrapped entirely in canvas. Cloaked in blank white textile, the industrial object is converted into its conceptual three-dimensional equivalent: the image of a sphere framed by a square. Anading leaves the exhaust fan on and running for the entire duration in the show, intending to observe how the object accumulates dust on the surface as the vacuum of air sucks minute particles towards the canvas covering. Ronald Anading is a Painting graduate from the University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts. He garnered the Gawad Cultural Center of the Philippines Award for Best Experimental Video in 1999 and was a recipient of the CCP Thirteen Artists Award for 2006. Blind Spot opens on July 6, Thursday at 6PM at Mag:net Gallery Paseo and runs until 31 July. For inquiries, please contact 8177895 (Jhennie) email magnetplus@gmail.com or visit magnet.com.ph
