Opening at the Mag:net Gallery ABS on August 8 is Trek Valdizno’s exhibit of his recent paintings. The title of the exhibit, Reductio Ad Absurdum, encapsulates the very workings of these paintings, as seemingly perfunctory exercises done instinctively and habitually as though there’s nothing more or less that could have mitigated such other than the practice itself, of the religious setting out of paint into paper or canvas producing swirling spirals, flowing across and amalgamating into marbled patterns. Somehow this also recalls the Taoist principle of wu wei as creation is, or painting for that matter is removed of its deliberateness, contradicting much the overt emphasis of causal logic of Western thought. The very medium which Valdizno uses, acrylic, bears much this principle of “diminishing will doing”, like water finding its own form among where it flows, and in trickles softens to pulp the ground where it lays (unless otherwise chemically altered). Yet Valdizno remains alert in stopping these flows to resemble familiar forms, avoiding it at the very first sign of its cognition. This constancy however in such a practice defines and determines its very end, that it is of a necessity mounting to its pronouncement of its very essence, which is to say as much of painting too, in general, of the whys and wherefores of it continually being made and re-invented – it has just has to be and not solely for the industry which spawned it.

Reductio Ad Absurdum will have its opening cocktails at 6:30 PM . It will be on view until August 30, 2006 .
