MAG:NET KATIPUNAN HANGING OUT CLASSES TO REOPEN IN NOV Enrollment is now open for this year’s Mag:net Katipunan Hanging out Classes which will start in November. A limited minimum of 8 and maximum of 10 students (first come first served) for each class is required to start a series of 4-5 sessions, which will be conducted once a week usually after 5PM, final schedules (need not consecutive) will be mutually agreed on between teachers and students. Started last year, Hanging out Classes (Mag:net’s alternative classes) were successful in bringing together a special kind of student-teacher bonding conducted in an intimate café setting rather than the classroom. Courses are culminated with students collectively presenting what they have created and developed during the course may it be a gig, a reading, a screening or an exhibit. Courses offered this year are: Creative Writing on Tuesdays (Hanging out with Alfred A. Yuson); Painting Techniques on Wednesdays (Hanging out with Alvin Villaruel); Songwriting on Thursdays (Hanging out with Cynthia Alexander); Rockstar Computer Skills on Fridays (Hanging out with JC Medina) and Cinematography on Saturdays (Hanging out with Nap Jamir). Computer Skills is a new course added this year. According to Medina, “Rockstar Computer Skills” is an alternative computer training course covering office applications, design tools, mind mapping and web applications for idea generation and productivity. What is so good about this course is Medina will give away softwares after the course. As in last year, students of Krip Yuson and Cynthia Alexander will once again hold a joint culminating gig in the café with poetry and songs which their students developed during the course. In the case of Villaruel’s students, an exhibition of their works will be exhibited along with his in a group show at The Wall at Mag:net High Street in December. Nap Jamir’s students’ works will be collectively premiered and included in Cinekatipunan programming in January. MAG:NET VIRTUAL GALLERY AND NEW BACKROOM LAUNCHED Mag:net Gallery is proud to announce the launching of its new website and its newly refurbished Backroom on Tuesday, 6 November at 6PM. Our congratulations to the main people who have been involved in the project since its conception in November of last year: Kiri Dalena (project director), Lisa Ito (writer) and other volunteers Poklong Anading, Risa Jopson, Mervin Espina, Vincent Silarde, Teta Tulay among others. We’re gratefullly thankful to the long list of filmmakers (over 200 as of last screening) who participated like Kidlat Tahimik, Tikoy Aguilos, Lav Diaz, Raymond Red, Nick de Ocampo, Roxlee, Ditsi Carolino, Rya Martin, Nap Jamir, Khavn, Sari Dalena, Keith Sicat, Elvert Banares, Mes de Guzman, Cesar Hernado, Auraeus Solito, John Torres, Ruelo Lozendo, Ellen Ramos and Ricky Orellana (and more…<sorry guys) and the many film institutions and university-based film societies and orgs that became part of the project. For one year, Mag:net Katipunan became a moviehouse from 5-7pm (except when it screened Lav Diaz’ 9-hour “Ebolusyon ng Pamilyang Pilipino”), Monday to Saturday, screening independent films and occasionally followed by Q&As and interactives with the featured filmmakers. For its second year, Cinekatipunan aside from its Monday to Saturday screenings would occasionally screen beyond Mag:net, in schools and communities and will begin to establish an archive of Philippine independent films. Producer Tony Gloria, a champion of anything Independent has been invited as guest of honor to the celebration on November 6, Tuesday at 5:30PM. Filmmakers, your presence is desired. MANINGNING MICLAT AT POETS’ ALCOVE In observance of her 7th death anniversary the late poet-artist Maningning Miclat is the featured poet at Mag:net Katipunan’s Poets’ Alcove for the month of November. An inspiration to many, Maningning’s death gave birth to the Maningning Miclat Awards, now a major institution in the Literary Arts community. Featured poem of Maningning is “Testimony” (a favorite of her parents) and will be unveiled on November 6 at 5PM. Writers and friends of the Miclat family are expected to attend the unveiling. Artist, curator and Big Sky Mind founder Ringo Bunoan presents “Archiving Artist-run Spaces“ (AARS) at Mag:net Katipunan which will take up Cinekatipunan’s 6 consecutive Wednesday programming for the Visual Arts in November and December. AARS is a project that gathers the documentation of 6 artist-run spaces in Manila including Pinaglabanan Gallery, The Junk Shop, Third Space, Surrounded By Water, Big Sky Mind and Future Prospects. These spaces were once vital centers for contemporary art, providing the much-needed arena for artists to produce and exhibit their work without the limitations of commercial galleries and traditional institutions. Not only did they help define a new direction for contemporary art practice, they also nurtured a significant number of artists who have made their mark in the Philippine art scene. Though they are no longer active, it is crucial to record these spaces and their activities and to share the information with the public. The project aims to contribute to the building of contemporary Philippine art history and to provide an opportunity for charting future possibilities. The AARS project is part of Bunoan’s ongoing research on Philippine contemporary art for the Asia Art Archive. Presentations and talks by artists who represented the spaces will be held together with slideshows and screenings of their documentation.
