'Marginals' at Mag:net Paseo
Briccio Santos
Marginals
14 December to 3 January, 2005
Opening: 6:30PM, 14 December, Wednesday
Briccio Santos presents small abstract works rendered in acrylic on paper
in 'Marginals', the artist's latest one-man exhibition at Mag:net Gallery Paseo, Makati City, from December 14 to January 3, 2005.
'Marginals' presents what Santos prefers to call 'spiritual clutter', where the process of 'allowing the subconscious to emanate' is privileged. 'Marginals' presents an array of seemingly interwoven yet anarchic forms,
connected through their population of common spaces.
This exhibition of small works incorporates varying levels of abstraction.
The forms are marked by Cubist-derived processes, such as cutting,
overlapping planes and splicing. Interlocking, twined grids and weave-like
structures imbue the forms with density and pattern. The artist's experimentation with textures, shadows, and spaces incorporates a
three-dimensional feel to the works. The overall effect of experiencing
the works up close is that of encountering an unfolding and evolving
entity, full of connected clusters and patterns.
Santos' works in 'Marginals' also differs from his part works in terms of
materials, scale, technique. In this exhibition, for instance, the artist
incorporates more vibrant hues into his normally-monotoned palette: swaths of turquoise, persimmon, violet, red, and yellow emerge in the sea of verdigris, shadows, and purplish-red forms. Santos also manages to
heighten the impression of creating space and depth in these small-scale
works.
Seen as a whole, the works are metaphors for the interwoven and unfolding nature of the artist's psyche, where direction emerges from disorder, where 'chance is a form of exactness', and where the marginals create possibilities for emergence.
The cocktails reception for 'Marginals' is on December 14, at 6:30 in the
evening. For inquiries, please contact mag:net Paseo at 8177895 or email
