18 April to 6 May 2006

On view at Mag:net Gallery Paseo from April 18 to May 6 is Mariano Ching’s recent works in an exhibit entitled Between The Stars and The Sea. The exhibit presents Mariano Ching’s installation exhibition of paintings, prints and objects. The body of work represents Ching’s interest in the realm of the unknowable as he tackles questions about mortality and the mystery of things that we may never fully comprehend.

In Mariano Ching’s works we see a juxtaposition of various images, including images of stars, galaxies, seascapes, still life and various doodling ranging from cartoon drawings to appropriated images from books and magazines.   For Mariano Ching the constant reiteration of images creates symbols, secret languages interpreted in various ways by different people. For him the repetition and layering of these offers endless possibilities for multiple readings. Most of his works often deals with this interest in using layered images to experiment the potentials of juxtaposition in the investigation of both formal and narrative conventions.   Between The Stars and The Sea was first exhibited at Voice Gallery in Kyoto , Japan .

Mariano Ching’s paintings, prints and illustrations are enriched by his training as graphic artist and by his experience growing up in the heart of Manila , weaving narratives of such existence and other probable realities hidden beneath the grime and squalor. He was a Mombusho-Japanese Foundation scholar attending Kyoto University in Japan as a research student of printmaking and ceramics for 2002-2004. He was also among those short-listed for the 2005 Ateneo Art Awards and has won illustration awards for children’s books Mayroon Akong Isang Puno and Bakit Matagal Ang Sundo Ko, both published by Adarna books.
