Johnny Alegre Affinity and Updharma Down at Mag:net Café

Manila music aficionados will be treated to back-to-back performances by Johnny Alegre Affinity and Updharma Down on Wednesday, January 11 at 9PM at Mag:net Café Katipunan. This very unique gig combination has joined two of the most dynamic bands in the country today and though generations apart, the progressiveness and timelessness of their music are what brought the two groups together. The evening therefore promises to be a wonderful musical experience- an event musicians and music lovers alike, young and old would love to experience.

Affinity is comprised by some of the music industry’s finest jazz instrumentalists including band leader and founder Johnny Alegre on guitar, Tots Tolentino on saxophone, Elhmir Saison on keyboards, Colby Dela Calzada on bass and Koko Bermejo on drums. Also revered as top-call session musicians, these virtuosos have chalked up years of experience as bandleaders in their own right, having led their own jazz ventures in the past. The group has just released their debut album under the independent jazz label – CANDID RECORDS.

Updharma derives its name to the concept that everything in existence is connected no matter how diverse and this is how the band explains their music- having rather dissimilar musical influences that have resulted in a dynamic sound meeting halfway but becoming cohesive. The four members who are only in their twenties have combined love for rock, jazz, electronic music and even movie soundtracks of particular composers whom they regard as music heroes, the result- a powerful subconscious merge of a tangled-up, smacked-down groove haven’t been heard before since fusion came about. It’s always refreshing to listen to Updharma Down, which was recently featured in MTV’s Advance Warning, the first local group seen and broadcasted not just in the Philippines but also worldwide.
