Roma Valles has been painting large photorealist works of objects such as shoes, animals, trains and people that are richly textured by paint itself and the layers of patinated memories embedded in these subjects, working each detail quite painstakingly, archaeologically digging through the layers of accumulated mire, dust and dirt, as if seeking to represent a civilization memorialized through their restructuring, reanimation.

Her shift into architectural details though presents a geological view, a focus on materiality and structure itself of weathered surfaces which recreates this time, abstract patterns deigned by such natural phenomenon.
For her show opening at the Mag:net Gallery ABS on November 17,  patterns of blocks and concrete can be surmised from a distance, hence the title of her show Blocks on White. Though it remains that these subjects are chosen
for Valles’ personal attachment to such as gleaned by a painting included in the exhibit,  The Sedimentation of The Mind Is A Jumbled Museum at the Vargas Museum in 2004 where swastika-inspired architectural details of a wall taken from an old magazine bespeak of her familial heritage.

Included also in the show are mixed media works on paper with images approximating the appearance of stones however minimally composed and differing in technique which attempts instead to their bodily sensation.

Blocks on White will have its opening cocktails on November 17, 2005 at 6:30 PM.  The show will run until December 6, 2005.
